WOYWW... An Unholy Mess...

...dear oh dear oh dear oh dear oh. I started off 2011 full of promises to keep the Room of Stash tidy... and I did make it almost through a whole year with it looking relatively clean and tidy and neat. And then disahhster struck... namely a very severe infestation of the worst critters known to man... yes, Messy Fairies. I am hunting high and low for a better excuse so indulge me do lol Anyways, the reason I am waffling on about my desk is because it is Wednesday which means it is time for us bloggers of the craft world to unite in a marathon blog hop... pop across to our esteemed leader, Julia's blog, to see all the deets...

Anyways... mid way through the marathon sample making bonanza and this is the state of my room... I know, it is disgraceful... but I can explain how it happened; ok, so, Christmas was upon us and I had...erm... neglected to make cards... so I grabbed loads of Xmas stash and set about making 50 odd in one weekend... which went really well, except... ahhh, ermmm... I then had to move very quickly onto catching up with the 12 Tags of Christmas... and then Mojo naffed orf and the Room of Stash was out of bounds... and then... well, I am out of excuses... the truth is, I am a messy moobag and I have let things slip!

My desk is a hive of Studio 490 activity - shows on Saturday at 12pm and 6pm - and the rest of the room is being ignored. Actually, it is very annoying in here at the moment because it is so messy... I had mooted the idea of taking my sample making to the Dining Room table... poor Grim turned a very pale shade of grey... so I quickly re-assessed that idea, I don't want to be making the poor lad ill with the thought of my stash ALL over the house do I? **although, he is so easy going he wouldn't mind... well, not much... really... lol**

Anyways... I won't have time to visit any of you this week... well, I might get a few visits done... so... as a thank you for leaving me a comment here I has some candy for you. There are some lovely charms and bits of Idea-ology, some Distress Inks, a Perfect Pearls Mists, a Maya Road chipbook and some ribbons... oh and a tag I made :O)) To be in with the chance of winning the candy all you need to do is leave me a comment here ..oh and you could tell me how you would go about clearing up this unholy mess (all suggestions will be gratefully received... if you have no idea where to start, don't worry... neither have I!!!)

Right then... time for me to get back to the desk... how come I only ever leave myself about 8" to work in? Tis a crafters thing I reckon... we all do it...don't we?? Oh and ... before I go... a very out of focus sneak peek at one of the samples I have made ... it will be in focus on Saturday lol Thanks for looking ... have a jolly day! TTFN

OK, I can make you the proud owner of a clean and tidy room with very little effort. Follow my instructions to the letter.....

1. Get a number of large cardboard boxes

2. Heave everything on the floor or not in it's rightful place into the boxes

3. Seal the boxes

4. Post them to me.

Voila! Well...... a girl's gotta try eh?

Lisa ;)

Good Morning Hels;
I have to say I was kinda pleased to see the state of your room. Made me feel a whole lot better about mine! See what nobody knows is that to sit at my table I have to navigate a veritable MINEFIELD of stuff! I've found that the best way to tidy the room is to close your eyes and imagine your room as it should be, et voila, no mess! I do it all the time..... Thanks for the chance to win some goodies and enjoy the shows this week.

Hi Hels
Music and chocolate are the only accessories that a girl needs to help clear the stash......oh and I've heard willpower helps but I've never been in any retail establishment that sells that!!! Lol!!
Looking forward to seeing all the lush samples that the whirlwind in the room of stash has produced, and keeping my fingers crossed for the candy......a Hels original??? Woop!!! Lol

Happy New Year Hels - so glad your mojo has returned. I had the very same idea for clearing - oops I mean cleaning - your room of stash as Lisa. I am sure I could make space in my workroom!!!
Looking forward to your Saturday show and also can't wait to find out what classes you will be teaching at The Stamp Attic.
Thanks for the chance to win some super stash.
Best wishes,
Annette

LOL! I would love to help you on the great tidy operation but if you saw my room at the moment you would know that I need to start tidying up myself first! I'm very good at the old "stack it up" method. Of course you could always just send me the mess and I will sort it! ROTFL!

Love your messy Room of Stash, makes mine seem only marginally worse than yours so, no clearing up OK.

Rosemary said...

If you really want to tidy it up you could pack it all in a box and send it to me LOL. Mind you mine p rob ably looks worse than that anyway.

Sample on your desk s looking good, LOL how's that for ignoring the mess, I went straight to your desk and ignored the floor. Must admit my floor is getting fuller by the day. Will look out for your shows. Tracy x

I have no idea how to tidy up a craft space so please don't ask me. However there's an amazing series of blogs this week on Julie Fei-Fan Balzer's blog. Fabulous candy. Please pick me. Can you see me jumping up and down and waving!

The tidy faeries are one option. Mostly I find organizing one group of items at a time, leads to finding lost treasures. Love your art!

Helen said...

Your room looks fab as always. How about an "open house" and we'll come and help you - ahem - tidy it... Failing that, put on your red shoes, click your heels and....
Love your candy - thanks for the chance to win!

Dawn said...

Those fairies visit me from time to time too, I find the best thing for me no matter what I am making right is seperate and catagorize first, stamps with stamps, cutting tools with cutting tools, etc... then go back and straighten and organize that area, and if I break it down into sections , instead of tackling a whole room work on a section at a time, if I stay in one place to long I get burnt out and nothing gets done, and by the way, all your creations are amazing

Jacqui Chimes said...

Sadly there is only one way - get on with it :-)) - though it'll just all come back again so not to be undertaken too often - the floors of most craft rooms are - i suspect - health and safety hazards - mine certainly is - but usually hidden from view in all photo shoots

Judi said...

It's so good to see that someone else has "stash" all over the floor too! It makes me feel so much better. I too tried to have a tidy up over the Christmas period but time flies by too quickly - I got visited by the time fairies as well as the messy fairies! I usually end up working on my lap as the desk is so cluttered - Good luck with the tidying but can't offer any solutions. Have a great year.

Inkypinkycraft said...

Well, I think you need a cleaning fairy now the messy fairy has left, not that they fly by here very often, or get a huge box scoop it all in, makes it seem better somehow until you need something then, voila mess again!!draftees need mess, all to do with creativity ...I THINK?!happy woyww hugs trace x..
Fab fab candy!!

Viv said...

Wot a nice tidy room Hels! I tidied my space and tidied away my mojo with it... so keep the mess is wot I say cos otherwise u won't be makin'anythin'! Alternatively, you could try leaving the lights off and wearing night goggles to navigate to your desk. Once sat in your chair you can just turn your back and then you won't see it....take night goggles of, turn on lights get creative. When bed time calls place said night goggles back on, give the SAS a ring (cos they're very good with ropes and extracting people from bombed areas) and they can come and rescue you.
Happy Days! x

Hels--looks like a job that needs the help of a friend, some music and a reward of goodies when it's all done. I like to change things around once in a while to perk up the old Mojo. Good luck. Bette

Elizabeth said...

Hi Hels, as you are partly responsible for my quandary today - i.e. not enough Wendy stuff in my artillary - then you could simply box it all up and send to me ... I'm not even as subtle as Lisa :))

However, being a neatnik, I can't help putting some suggestions forward. Firstly, give yourself a weekend or a 2/3 day window in which to do this ... that means scheduling it deliberately ... nothing else will do.

1. Take three boxes marked as (a) use frequently (b) use sometimes (c) rarely use at all

2. Place each item into the appropriate box until desk, floor, etc., is totally clear

3. Take a damp cloth, wet wipe - whatever - and wipe down all surfaces

4. Starting with box (a)put each item in its rightful place ... and that may not be your workdesk, it could be a drawer or shelf ... it is definitely not the floor! If you can't immediately think of the right place for it DO NOT JUST PUT IT ON YOUR WORKDESK ... no, put it in box (b) ... this works, believe me :)

5. Do the same wit the contents of box (b) and again if you can't find a home for an item place it in box (c)

6. Finally on to box (c) ... treat as box (a) and (b). Anything you can't find a home for, you probably don't need at all ... give it due consideration and then either throw it out, make a candy out of it, or, and back to where I started, toss it in my direction :))

If I didn't live so far away in Scotland I'd offer to be an organising fairy for you :)

Your candy is gorgeous and I look forward to watching your next TV appearances. Elizabeth x #96

Ellie Knol said...

Just start somewhere. First think of how you would like to reorganize it, then see to it that you get the right cupboards, drawers etc. and just start. Maybe you should first put everything in boxes, and then work through a box one by one.
If you've really got too much, I wouldn't mind putting some of it in my drawers!

Sarah said...

I don't think either of use will be making the glossy pages of 'Where Women Create' this week. Their studios are usually the size of my house and clean enough for open heart surgery! Last time I had a huge sort out I just simply got stuck in... Starting on one side of the room taking one area at a time into the spare room. Dumped it on all the bed, sorted out the crap/misfits - putting them to one side, tidied it all up, wiped it all down and put it on the floor on the 'sorted' side. Eventually you get through it all and have an empty craft room which is then a doddle to clean. Then it all goes back. It's also a good way to do an inventory of your stash. I did it in one day - took from early to quite late but it saw me through the last 6 months. Time for another one...as said, you just gotta start and good music definitely helps! Just get this weekend all done, no point being tidy now... and then it's Operation DeFuzz. Will do you the world of good... x Sarah.

Lynn W. said...

If it makes you fell any better Hels, my craft room is much much worse (I can't actually get in the door anymore)! Trouble is I need an inkpad that is about 8 feet away from me but I don't think even Chris Bonnington and a dozen sherpers could reach it for me now! I think I need to follow Elizabeth's tips as I am currently a terrible warning rather than a good example. Besides I need to make room for all the new stamps I am trying to buy from a certain ebay seller!
Thanks for the chance to win some lovely Helsness.

What lovely candy! Do many fun things I can do with all of it.

As for your mess, my craft room is small. So when it's a mess I pull everything out of the room that is on the floor or anywhere. Then I start with the pile and bring in the stuff and put it away. My clean craft room only lasts about 30 minutes because in the pile of stuff I find new stuff that I've never used!

CRAFTY WOMBLE said...

Oooh Isn't Elizabeth's method good! Personally I think you are just not making best use of the stack and push back method. Definitely not enough piles or high or teetering enough!

Redanne said...

It is not really all that bad, the only way I can find things is if my room is a mess, when it is tidy I can't find anything. But, my New Years Resolution was to tidy too, I parcelled up load of magaaines and gave them to a crafty friend, put all the mess in boxes and put the boxes where the magazines used to be - sorted! Now where did I put that new cardstock................? Regards, Anne Rx PS - love everyone else's ideas and thanks for the opportunity to win some candy!

Love the look of the sample beautiful colours.

As for the mess Hels, if the patented 'push-back' method won't work for you then I'm afraid a constant stream of tea/coffee and a monster box of maltesers is in order to clear the mess!!!

Hiya Hels

Isn't it amazing how you can start off with a fairly large area to work with and by the time you are finished, you are down to a little 6 x 6 inch area!

How to clean your room...
Lets see (scratching head) if you clean it, it will just get messed up again and again. If you make it tidy, it will stifle your creativity (happens to me every time)! You can just make a path through the pile, so that you can at least walk through and around the stuff so that you can still find what you need (smirking ear-to-ear).

I haven't got the slightest idea on how to clean/organize your room. I just know that you are always creating and I would love to be able to create as much as you.

Thank you for the chance to win such wonderful goodies.

Cheers,

Hi Hels, well your projects are wonderful I love the way you use colour on your creations!

Wow! That really is quite the disaster isn't it. I think you have your work cut out for you to tidy it since you can't really access everything right now. You'll have to do it the same way you eat an elephant: one bite at a time.

My thought is to start piling like things together off to the side until you can reach your desk and other bins and then start putting them away. One bite at a time!

I have not seen your room look this bad since you moved. I was SO proud of you and your efforts. But I know things happen when you fail to return things to their rightful spot as soon as you have used it. That is when you have to take at least a day, take in-progress photos for encouragement, and get things put away neatly and in their proper place. And remember! It always looks the worst right before everything comes together. I know you want to get this mess cleaned up because I applauded your comment that it was hard working in a messy room.

Good luck with the shows Hels, i'm off to set the recordning thingy up now. No idea about the tidying up, I don't believe in it lol. A tidy craft room is the surest way to send your mojo off on his travels, they thrive on mess and heaps of stash where they can hide so I'd leave well along

As a creative person you cannot be expected to clean up "mess". Just ignore it Hels eventually it will level out.

Loving your work.

You are doing a brilliant job on C&C! As for help with your tidying I am soooo the wrong person to ask! I'm trying to downsize EVERYTHING to move to a flat and I'm on about week 12!!

Just watching you on the telly - OMG how good are you. Thanks for the candy chance.

Room looks good to me Hels lol. Fab blog candy xxx

Oh, don't clear it yet, Hels, at least until you have entered the photos for the Turner Prize. Your messy craft desk looks a whole lot better than Tracy Emin's messy bed so I'm sure you'd win the next one.

Failing that, just use your forearms and shove it up a bit to give you room to work!

Love seeing you on TV today - first time, but won't be the last.

Have really been enjoying watching you this lunchtime. Pity you didnt have more time for your project though! I will watch again tonight! Your room of stash looks a busy place - what naughty fairies, I think they must be breeding everywhere because they have really been at my shed too. I did think of blogging a pic, but it is just too shameful by half! The big boxes for sorting out someone else mentioned sounds a great idea - I may have to try it myself. Great candy too! Elaine

a-maz-ing show today Hels, what stunning samples.

Lucky girl to have 8" square to work on - am currently crafting on my lap.

Sending my personal cleaning fairy your way and hopefully she'll get some kind of order for you, or at least kick those messy fairies out.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the room of stash, it is just like mine! Wonderful samples Hels, I wish I had all the ideas you have, my poor pea brain doesn't have much going on in it at all, so it is wonderful to see all you get up too!(Crafterly I mean!)

I have just found this wonderful bloghop! I love the idea of seeing what everyone is working on! My craft area is out of control, I am planning on straightening it a bit today, In between making meals and tending to children with fevers.....who am I kidding, I will be reading blogs all day! I really love your blog, it has made me smile this morning!

Wow makes me feel relieved; I'm not alone with a messy craft room. To help you; humm, I don't have a clue. But I'm willing to take your stuff to my room.....hehehe. Thanks for the opportunity to win your beautiful blog candy.
Now I have to find out if I can have the craft TV channelyou mentionned.

Have a great weekend

Wouldn't be crafting if it was tidy. Caught you on create and craft ealier, fantastic show and samples were amazing.

OMG! I didn't realise that other people's craft rooms were as messy as MINE!!! I've been thinking it's time to tackle it, but like you, I don't know where to start. I was reading some hints and tips the other day, and one idea was to attempt a drawer or box at a time, that way there are no excuses about not having the time. In theory it sounds good, but I'll let you know ............. when I get time, lol.

I'm afraid I have just relocated to the dining room and left the mess behind hoping it will sort itself out. Problem is, son and daughter are coming round tomorrow for dinner - yikes! I'm sure there's a dining table under that lot somewhere. Wonder if they'll mind having lunch on trays or perhaps they'd rather craft than eat?? Love the candy by the way.

Oh Hels what can I say saw you on C & C today and loved everything you did, so had to have a look at your blog......... best thing I have done recently as I now can see I am part of
"normal crafters
anonymous"

who have rooms as bad a mine. So now I can go to bed and think this room is normal......

looking forward to your nest shows

Isn't a messy room, surface, desk, floor, part of the creative process? Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it! and besides that, if I put it away I will never find it again;)

Emilysnan I have heard of being organised but making cards for in a hundred years time is ridiculous! LOL Hels I loved your demo's on C&C and found your blog, as a result of that. I am the last person to solve your dilemna, I seem to spend more time tidying than crafting. The problem is, when I tidy things away I can never find them, so I spend ages trying to find stuff. Yet when my room is a tip, I know exactly where things are. I think the moral to this story is don't waste your time tidying.

Debbie Tinks said...

not to good at cleaning my craft room,
so don't have any tips
but watched your show on cc and your demos are great so if you have a untidy craft room it means your a good crafter

It was great seeing you on the telly yesterday - the shows were great and you did not look nervous at all! The samples were amazing!!!

Well, I wouldn't try to do anything and would let the good House Fairies do the job for you ;). Perhaps with a helping hand/paw of Alfie Cat, just like my Kropek does...?

Lovely candy - thank you for the chance to win!

Hugs

At first I thought someone had sneaked in and taken a photo of my room!!!!!

Problem is would rather craft than tidy! To be honest it is the only untidy room in the house so I don't feel too bad after all its only me that goes in there!

Looking forward to your workshops at Dawns in March. See you then.

Some really great ideas for cleaning up the crafty mess ! lol. I ususally ignore it until I feel like crying - and then I start the big clean up. Naturally, while sorting, I discover stuff I bought and haven't used, so I start playing...and playing, and before I know it, I'm crafting instead of soring, and so it goes.

Thanks for a chance at some stash. :)

Karen said...

I absolutely cannot speak on the crafty mess front so I won't attempt to advise!
I did catch the 6pm show though: Great stuff, well done Hels!
And thanks for the chance to win some candy !
