A Song In My Heart...

...you know that book... you know the one... the one that when I first got it I said "huh?" cos I didn't quite expect it to be like it is??? What am I on about??? A Compendium of Curiosities is what I am waffling about today... The truth is, when I first bought it I didn't really think much of it.. maybe cos I was expecting it to be like Tim's other books... but... I am eating my words right this mo as I keep getting tonnes of inspiration from it... and today is another day of taking ideas from the book and making something myself :O)

The card is based on a card on Page 72 of the book - and cos I am a lucky gal and have the Heart Alteration Die I managed to put something together... however! I haven't got a sewing machine to make the stitches on the ribbon, so I left mine off... actually that is a bare faced lie, I do have a sewing machine, it is a huge one that is really jazzy and does loads of things, I am toooooo thick to even thread it properly... so I thought... how about buying one of those diddy ones... you know the type, teensy but perfect for papercrafting...whatcha fink? Are they any good and if so, would a simpleton like me be able to use it??? *This is the girl who was thrown out of Needlework class at school for breaking toooo many sewing machines... I ended up doing Metalwork ROFL*

All of the stashy bits on the card are available from The Artistic Stamper... I used a Texture Fade for the middle bit of card... and then Distress Inks, Grungeboard, Grungepaper, Gold Dabber, Rock Candy Stickles, Old Paper Cracklepaint and gold UTEE (for the crown)... thanks for looking... there's a heck of a lot of noise coming from the garden again, sounds like blackbirds again... Alfie is out there with his friend Foxes and I am pretty sure they are up to no good! TTFN

Lovely artwork Hels. Must admit I would like a sewing machine a small one but like you not very good on using one LOL, not used one since I was at school so would be interesting to find out if those small ones are any good and which ones are the best. I can feel another purchase coming on for me. Hope you can get them on-line. Just working on my Sunday Stamper challenge right now but taking longer than I thought, my pup keeps interruptin me. Have a good day, Tracy Evans x

This is gorgeous hun :-)
As for the machine, I think the threading would be the same really so would you be able to thread the diddy one? And what would you do with your super duper one? If you're going to keep the super duper one I think you should just use that - as I say the threading shouldn't be much different so I wouldn't bother with a little one unless you planned to get rid of the other one. I know it's easy for me to say but there should be a guide for threading - maybe little arrows to follow. Also if you Google how to thread 'xxxxxxx' sewing machine you may even find a little video for yours. There are videos on YouTube too.

Oh hels I have met a kindred spirit, I too have an all singing all dancing sewing Machine and not a clue how to use it! Did book in for two course at Adult Ed to learn how to sew, but each time the night before the class was due to start they rang up to say that it was cancelled! Any way love the card!

I finally ordered the book so expect it shourtly. As I recall, Tim said it's more of a technique rather than project book. Well, in any case it will be helpful to me because I'm a novice. :pve your piece. I've never gotten the nerve to sew on my cards either but you've reminded me I have one of these dinky machines...somewhere. xxD

Lovely artwork as usual Hels. As for the sewing machine, I had thought about getting a small one for the studio, too, but then I decided to just "borrow" my Mum's old one for free! lol

I kept telling myself I really didn't need that die Hels, but I succumbed last week and am now the proud owner of it.

Er, I too have one of those teeny tiny machines which I bought just for papercrafting after letting my daughter 'borrow' my big all singing, all dancing one and ................ it's still in the box! I must get it out and let you know how easy it is.

Love this, must get the heart die.... lol.
Couldn't you just draw some stitches on? Think it's much cheaper! (then you could buy something else with the money you've "saved")

I hadn't really looked at the book for ages until the compendium of curiosities challenge started last week, it really got me looking for ideas in there. Must try to re-create some of the things from the book.
May have to get the previous books too, can never have enough tim inspiration, eh?!

Love that new Tim die (heart) - must get that one. I have a very basic sewing machine, dedicated solely to paper crafting. I don't use it often, and I only use black or white thread, but I'm always glad I have it when I do use it. I had one of the really cheap tiny ones - I didn't like it - stitches not even - only would do straight stitches - no zig zag. I'd say stick with your fancy one and take a lesson on how to thread it... Good luck!

love your card ... i too am not sure about the book but haven't sat there and created anything with it yet !

I have a very fancy machine, but I bought a Janome Sew Mini for my craft room. I LOVE it - it is small enough to leave out all the time, coz let's face it, out of sight out of mind. It is the ONLY mini machine that is worth it to buy. Gina K has a series of VIDEOS on every aspect of this machine, she SHOWS you everything! Also, the treadle only does TWO speeds - chugging along (not racing along) and STOP. Great for beginners, it just kachunks along at one speed only. It has several different zig zag and straight stitch options. No light - I just place a little desk lamp right behind the machine. After all, watcha expect for less than $50 USD? Here is the link to all six of her videos and they are GREAT!!!

Oh - I love your card too! LMAO!

A lot of the little machines are crap, but this one is worth the money and reliable. And small!

I had one of those little crafts only machines, and swear it is the reason I had sew-o-phobia for all these many years. The thread kept breaking, the stitches were uneven, and I just plain hated it.
This year I bought a simple, yet "grown up" machine, a Brother that was under $90. It doesn't sing or dance, but it is easy to thread and makes a nice variety of straight and zig zag stitches. I keep it out, right on the table next to my laptop, and find myself using it all the time. I was the WORST with machines, so if I can do it, so can you. Don't buy a wee one, just get someone to teach you how to use the one you already own.

I know alot of people have gone for one of them Jenome mini's, I however bought a big one....the thing I love about Jenome is the simplicity, it even threads the needle for you! I was always crap with a machine at school...I too ended up in metalwork and woodwork rofl ;)
