WOYWW... Look Who's Back!!!

...much mirth and merriment in the Room of Stash yesterday... look who is back in his rightful place! Yes indeedily, Victor Vagabond has arrived and is settling nicely into his new home. Actually, this is Victor MkII but I love him just the same. So, why am I waffling on about who is on my desk... well, that is because today is Wednesday which means it is time for What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday, the marathon blog-athon which is invented and hosted by Julia Dunnit, who happens to be Chief Desk Inspector... all the deets on how to join in with this phenomenon are ... HERE!

So, remember last week I was bemoaning a midge bite that I had right in that hard to reach middle of the back place? Well, I should have kept my trap well and truly shut because over the last few nights I have been treated like a veritable feast... and upon waking this morning I have just counted no less than 28 bites on my body, legs, arms... even my neck! I am seriously thinking that I have a Vampire Midge in the bedroom but... how am I going to stop the little beastie from gnashing me!! Any tips/hints/ideas will be gratefully received... I am normally bitten by bugs but this is ridiculous... Grim on the other hand has a big fat zero bite count... it must be the sweeter blood they are after! At this rate I will be positively faint with blood loss! Right, I must away... that door frame over there is looking perfect for a bit of back scratching lol TTFN!

Citronella.... keeps all midgies away - a little oil rubbed over a light bulb works wonders! My nan swore by drinking mint tea before bedtime and said the mozzies hatd it! She'd also add a sage leaf to her tea because it stopped 'hot flushes' in the night and this also put off the biting-baddies :)

Anyway... LOVING your desk! I so wish I had a vagabond - they look so lovely!

I cant believ soo many Mr V's are conking out?why is it the same fault touch wood as hits head mine is ok,but bit weary now..lol.
I have heard of citronella in bowl of water either by bedside or in room surpose to keep them at bay.
I must admit usually i never get bit but this year had 6 so far just on my legs so maybe this year they are Mega Beasties
Have fab weednesday hugs Judex 15

Creative comments rather overshadowed by your midge bites comment. Have you tried anti-histamine tablets to help you? Oh, I feel for you. How awful. I agree about citronella and if I think of anything else I will be back.
Thanks for sharing - Hugs, Neet #4

So glad your Vagabond problem got resolved so quickly and I am sure your new VVII will settle in at the speed of light!!
Mozzies... pesky darn things... citronella is good... I smear midgy cream on my arms before bed and that keeps them away!! You have to spray your room... they hide behind the headboard and wait for you to go to sleep and then come out... attracted by the air you exhale.

The vagabond looks at home in his rightfull place.

Have heard about citronella too. Oh and Marmite as they don't like vitamin B in the blood.

Hope that helps x

Good to see Vic II - hope he behaves himself! Good luck with your midge-bashing/banishing....

I've got just one on my leg. I caught the beastie that got me though. Hate to say this, but have you checked AlfieCat lately?? My poor Purdy was always bringing little friends home which in the end cost over £70 to get rid of. That was over 20yrs ago!! Victor looks a little bare. Did you manage to get hold of another Union Jack sticker??

I'm another who always suffers from being bitten....they like female hormones! Apparantly eating marmite helps to keep them away....I guess you either love it or hate it!

Mm, here in Oz we use Eucalyptus oil as insect repellent or tea tree oil, but believe lavender and citronella are good too if the others are not available would rub a lander or citronella cloth over your sheets top and bottom and it may deter the midges or else cover your self if obvious spots with oil.. commiserations am at target for sandflies and mozzies as we call them over here too. Wow fancy you having one of Tim's machines trying not be green about that!

Unlike Shaz I'm definitely not green about your Vagabond I'm afraid - that's three of you on this thread and comments who have had trouble with theirs! I'm sticking with my Big Shot.... LOL.... might help with the bingo wings... Glad you've got him back though - hopefully he will behave himself now! Poor you on the midge bites though :(

As someone who knows nothing about stamping, cards etc - WHAT does that machine do?????? Looks like something from the Tardis.....! Avon's 'Skin so Soft' range is amazing for keeping the mozzies away and smells good too. xx

Glad to hear that VV is back in action! Sorry to hear about all the mosquito bites. They are not much fun. Hope the Citronella works. Vickie $43

Glad you have a new Vagabond! Poor you with the mozzies, hope you can find something that works for you!

Annette Goodey said...

So pleased to see that your new Victor is now installed in the room of stash. I am almost afraid to use mine in case it packs up!
I agree with Lunch Lady Jan that Avon's skin so soft can do the trick against biting insects of all sorts and it definitely beats the smell of citronella hands down. You can also buy a gadget which plugs into an electric socket to keep mozzies at bay. I always take one of these abroad and it seems to do the trick.
All the best

Welcome to Victor II. I still want one, even if their "health" seems a bit off ! Have a fun day. Hope the itches go away soon.

Glad to see you have a new Victor. I have found that a cream called Eurax Hc is brilliant for taking the itch out of insect bites. They have it at Boots. It may not be on display, so you may have to ask at the pharmacy desk for it.

I too suffer when bitten and have been advised the following:

all people get bitten - some of us react to the bites more than others,

in a midge cloud I come out looking like I have chicken pox...

to reduce reaction -I take an anti histamine ( eg. Piriton), apply antihistamine to the bites if the skin is unbroken,

citronella in the room will reduce flying insects, but won't stop the bites
DEET on the bedhead sometimes helps, if you are willing to put a smidge on your ankles and wrists it will stop bites

and so sorry to say this - I found a 5 year change of bed mattress makes a big difference.....(I am NOt accusing you of having a twenty year old mattress btw)

also I check out if next doors moggie/doggie is visiting and leaving me some unwanted friends...

Frontline (pharmacies and vets) do a spray that I do the house with once a year before it gets hot and that works a treat...as well as 'doing' the pets with the drops, if I don't do both I sure do get reactions to bites...

also great desk - hope the VV mkII sees some serious action now it is back.

You can buy Citronella joss-sticksthat you acn burn, or oils/crystals that you can have a tealight under, before you go to bed. I found insect wipes& bite pens( got mine from Poundland) worked fantasically well too.

nerllybird said...

Hmmm....you sure you haven't got chickenpox??!! Sorry to hear about all your bites, my mum and DS3 have a terrible time with them, too.

And what happened to Victor MkI, may I ask? There was a thread on UKS about malfunctioning Vagabonds but I can't seem to find anything similar on US threads. Curious...

Nice to see Victor MkII on your desk. We get bad mosquito bites here (Canada), and use a product called a Therapik to make them stop itching. It's a small, battery powered device that heats the bug bite and neutralizes the proteins in the bite and they stop itching, as long as you treat them within about a day of getting the bite. I would think it would work for midge bites too. I've also read that a cotton swab with bleach on it works, same principle, destroying the protein.

Oooo ek! Darn midges are pain eh! I burn some Lime & Grapefruit oil in a oil burner for a few hours on warm nights, it seems to keep them at bay! Hope they improve, and the Vagabond MkII!

The cats get most of the insects that enter the house so cant help but I think it is the smell of the sweat they are attracted to so the tea thing makes sense.
I have read a lot about Vagabond problems...especially the motor and how some have had problems having it sorted ...I think they only give a 90day garrantee. Glad you were sorted out.

You're obviously not eating enough Marmite! So many people seem to be having problems with there Vagabonds:( Glad you got yours resolved.

I am with Morti and sticking with my Big Shot!!
Sorry about your midge problem - citronella, antihistimines and marmite is the only solutions I know work. Not all on toast at the same time though!!! LOL!!!

Hi Hels, where are you? - it sounds as though you're in the Scottish Highlands! I believe that Avon sell a cream that is very effective in keeping midges at bay (though that is not its intended purpose) I forget what it is called but must be worth checking out with your nearest Avon Lady. Hope some of the suggestions bring relief. Elizabeth x #72

Anyhoo...loving your desk as always hunni...try some Tea Tree oil...wee biting critters hate the smell and it also takes the itch out of existing bites!

What does Victor Vagabond do? Oh dear, I'm probably way behind the times, am I? We had a midge plague here (Sydney, Australia) earlier this year. Nothing helped to repel them. Mozzie repellant won't work either. But if you have been bitten terribly, as I was, the only relief is antihistamines from the chemist. They can easily become infected, if you keep scratching like I did.

Sue from Oregon said...

I actually got to meet Victor's cousin here in the USA last week. At my local craft store :(.

Try Avon Skin So Soft and I also hear they don't like Garlic. Never tried that one, but a good Italian dinner might just be the ticket! Good Luck!

good luck with Victor MkII and hope you sort out the mozzie prob soon!

they don't seem to like me but DH suffers as you do, hope the bites heal soon too!

I missed why you needed a Mark II, but I hope you'll be very happy together, for longer than the Mark 1!! Bugs and bites - me too, and never himself..amazing innit. My cure is Quinine,to be found in tonic water. Which can only be drunk when diluted with Gin....you can see the scene...!
